R & A House, Torquay 2023
When designing the Torquay house for a retired couple, Place Architects sought to address the basic principles of protection from the elements. The property was thoughtfully designed to be particularly robust to the west, and turned its back on the blustery south, westerly winds.
The house is positioned on the site to act as a shroud and barrier to the winds, to enable the occupants to enter to the property through a protective cave-like opening. Upon entering the home, the occupants experience a sense of reveal, as the space opens out into an expansive living space, perched in the trees, overlooking the golf course. This calming haven offers a welcome relieve from the outside elements.
