J & C House, Mollymook 2015

A nature loving couple with an Australian and Norwegian background, purchased a narrow, steep block in a coastal area of NSW, with the dream of creating a beautiful sanctuary for their family.

After discussing their needs and requirements, Peter undertook research in the local area. He found that there was a common theme of volume built, brick veneer houses, with tiled roofs and double garages, which were quite generic in nature.

The client agreed that they were looking for a more individualised approach, that better reflected their personality and love of the natural landscape. They also wanted the house to reflect an eclectic approach, as practiced in Norway.

Place Architects saw an opportunity to design a unique home, that took advantage of sea breezes, views to the coast and north facing sun light.

The Mollymook House was designed to be elevated above the street and cut back into the rear of the site, to take advantage of the views and enjoy a more secluded position away from the road. The elevation allows the house to open out onto an appealing, elevated grassed courtyard area.

The garage is tucked in under the house and is concealed by Australian native plants and shrubs.
