C & N House, Brighton House 2017

The Brighton House was designed for a professional couple, with a keen interest in the environment and desire to live in a more organised, more liveable home.(Upon our first meeting the camping gear and bikes were crammed into sheds and space was in short supply)

The goal was to convert their 1930’s semi-detached house into a more functional and appealing home. Place Architects designed the space to reflect the laid-back nature of the clients and create a simple, calm space, in which everything had its place.

Employing the existing heritage listed house, the new addition blends itself around a courtyard at the side and rear of the property. The spaces are generous and offer a welcome relief from the smaller scale of the existing home.

The addition provided an opportunity to introduce storage areas for camping gear, while bikes were placed at a new gate house, or storage shed. Within the living space, storage is tucked away behind a wall of sliding screens, concealing shelving, toilets, and study spaces, which is all complemented by natural Black Butt plywood ceilings and well resolved joinery.
